Archimedes used a mirror to burn sails of Roman ships during battle of Syracuse. The year was 213 BC. | Remember the show "Secret Agent Man"? Part of the theme song was "they've given you a number ... and taken way your name". | The HOPI believe a major change is coming. End of the world? |
Welcome home, Rangers. We trust your latest mission was successful. DISCLAIMER #1: Rogue Rangers are the imagination of the sick-&-tired website author, who spends his nights sticking out his hitchiker-thumb at the sky, hoping THEY will come back. DISCLAIMER #2: If you are not a Rogue Ranger, the following information will be of NO INTEREST to you. In fact it is downright boring, so go away!!
DISCLAIMER #3: This code has been online for over four years on the GEOCITIES.COM server and we never got a response at any of the listed email addresses, so we are assuming it will still go unnoticed here-and-now (uploaded sep2009) until we are ready to publish our book. We store it online like the big-brother sites, but on an out-of-the-way server. Page layout ain't perfect, but it doesn't need to be. Learned to codee while living under a bridge. Wrote it all myself in NOTEPAD.
Be Who You Need Be. Be Who, What, When, Where, Why you need to be. Road Rangers deal primarily with relationships -giving people an opportunity to change what they believed to be hopeless relationships or situations. It was up to them (us) to appear on the scene at just the right time and place (refer back to the 5W's). Insanity has best been described as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. We provided a timely change to the insanity. If the subject had not grown too comfortable in the insanity of their lives, they accepted a change one of their 5W's and is now living a new life. If the subject chose not to change, we must leave them to the insanity. Free Choice is cardinal. Either way we always moved on, looking and lead to our next life. Begin a new understanding of things past, present, and future. Consider the possibilities of parallel universes. Our thoughts are creating our realities. Change your thoughts -- yeah change your realities. Too many folks are limiting themselves. Our purpose is to help release candidates from their limits. Learn from the past, survive. Change your past, succeed. RogueRangers work with many areas of alternative energies. There are energetic fields that few understand. We must work with the new technologies. These fields sometimes goes beyond the physical 3-dimensonal world we see Prepare yourselves. We learn, we seek, we teach. Today people are all bred to be hybrid (android, halfbreed, fencesitters, etc). We are being presented too many "acceptable" choices; enforce Too much gray... No more black & white decisions permitted. We are becoming politically-corrected couch-potatoes. Seems there is always somebody else to blame so we don't have to take personal responsibility. "They" are either at fault or responsible to solve our troubles or going to save the day. That's us, Rangers. We are the theys; the somebody else people need to blame or pray will come solve a need. Parallel Universes. Different realities. Shifting magnetic fields. Time travel. Infinite simultaneous lives, we change ourselves by our wants and needs. In a world of endless imagination, anywhere the mind can go, we will follow. Our new Rangers in this version of reality must prepare for the current future by studying back-to-the-earth energy solutions and end-of-the-world prophecies. We must help them find those solutions ... before they turn their prophecies into their reality. Get busy. Many clocks are ticking. We're not here to be overly melodramatic; nor do we consider ourself overly paranoid (although the favored time of computing is late nite when one sees a mirrorlike reflection in the window so its possible to view whats in front and behind at the same time). Parallel Universes. Different realities. And sometimes, you have to be the person stated on your current "legal" ID. Have you discovered that the images above are links? Each opens a new window into our world. Click on one, if you dare. Let's continue our journey. NOTICE/WARNING: Use care. Having several alternative realities overlapped can blur the true path. |

RogueRanger 301 -- this is the rambling of an old ranger who just wants to find a home. While I am looking, i shall try to write a book. That way I might accomplish at least one of the two tasks.

After leaving Micah Village, NM, We headed EAST. Looking for new adventures. Found them.
|
From my travels of Route66 this summer (tho nobody cares what I say -- Sunday morning-10am-12jun- Barter does Work!! - Aculpolco Mexican Restaurant - north OKC - pulled weeds for two hours. Got an outstanding plate of burritos rice and beans. Alternative transport. In the city its called carpooling. On the highway its called hitchiking (national carpool). Thurs23rd-Branson (cont)-Got the hammock up. Need to dig out the nail polish and treat some tick and chigger bites. -and eat that damn onion- it will chase away bugs. Stove on - (citrenella candel, split open beer can w/ shredded potatoes, onion, ham and Arby's FIRE sauce); Alice Cooper's show on the radio playing oldies rock signing off for now. going to type this in Word so I can save it to my floppydisk, cause I wont always have internet. Plan to put it both places so I can actually keep it this time instead of letting my words fade away as my mind does. Fri,24June(cont) - Walked another couple of miles. Truck stopped. Bill is a framer. Had his little boy in a car seat. “I can give you’re a ride about 3 miles”. ((Funny now, that 3 miles would have left me on 160, a day before that car came that hit me)) Being friendly (and my not watching since I was in SELL AN OVEN MODE) he brought me into Tanneyville – 3 miles up Hwy76. Didn’t even buy an oven, but he did buy the idea for $2.02 (all his change). So I have a 40-ozer Miller High Life here under the tree and I am aimed north to H60, by way of Brownpatch and Dogwood. I can take Hwy14 back to West Plains before reaching H60. Guess we will see. My find my layover I was looking for – and it wont be the IRONBAR HOTEL. Reckon I have another mile to walk to find campable trees, so as soon as the jug is empty I will carry on. (I’m barely 3 miles north of H160 but I have learned not to go back – usually a purpose in my road change (someone, something). What did I miss those times I did turn back without reason? Hell, we used to take road trips on Sundays and turn down an unknown road sto see what we could that we would have missed otherwise. I am learning, I hope. My cigarette brand (of the snipe I found) is ROGER. Is that a sign, or what? 16Jun05—2 am – Cassville, just outside of Tulsa, OK. It was worth the walk from 51st to 139th east. Mark turned around. Had a cold beer and a bowl. We stopped at Harley’s Bar. Drank beer (a BUCKET is a tin bucket filled with ice and 6 long necks). Played darts, talked to a lady (told her there was only one word to describe her: “Damn!). Mark carried me out to the truckstop. Put up my hammock in the trees behind a refrigerator rig. Torrential rain! Flat-line wind! Could only hold for dear life. Closest I been to lightening!! Looked like a meteor coming right at me. BOOM! It was gone, Im still here. Claremore, (Home to Will Rogers) OK. (my birthday ..) Walked to the Double Truss Bridges. Stuck out my thumb. Ride by 2 Mormons into Claremore. Sold oven plans for $20!! Wow, 20 bucks dude!! Candles, laundry (Laundry mat- met a cute chick (Chelsea?). But 4 kids? Been there done that. Not again. I’ll stick with Rosy Palm and her four sisters. ), gravy mix, sewing kit, bottle of Kentucky whiskey and 2 cigars, and still have a couple of bucks in my pocket. Tonight is by a metal pumping station shed – storms get bad, I will chance the black widows. (And it did!) Damn. The train whistle is still calling. Where could I go in a boxcar? Maybe tomorrow – I’ll find the station. Foyil, OK – caught a ride (Nancy?). She took me to see the “largest totem pole in the world – 90 foot of steel, concrete, sand”, then home for a plate of beans, and a few beers. Spent the night (out back). -1928 Route 66 footrace. Andrew Hartley Paine, grad of 1927, won transcontinental foot race, LA-NYC 3423.5 miles, world record in 573 hrs 4 min 34 seconds. – Frito pie and a glass bottle of Coke was lunch as I walked out of town. Audre Cosgrove picked me up in a little red datsun pickup just outside of Beldlord(?), OK. Took me to her house, resting up in front of the air conditioner (talking to her husband). Going to get a ride (2hr) to Joplin and Hwy 60 this evening. ((Got the ride with her and her grandpa. She snuck me $6 and a cigarette pack with her name and address. Bought a couple quarts of beer and made camp down by the freeway as soon as they dropped me off)). {16oct05}
Sat-Noon-25Jun-Under trees a couple of miles from Bradleyville (StHwy76). Signs? Picked up a Keystone Light 30-pack box to cut some cardboard for AOL fish. There is a 6-pack, hot, but opened, inside! I am on the right path. Listening to classic rock US97fm. alice Cooper was on again last night. Song -"Head out on the highway, looking for adventure." Got to roll a cigar. Found a stoogie stump the other day. broke it up and it smokes in TOP papers real good. Tues, June21,545pm -- Got to tell you about Joe (Cornmeal Joe) at the "Cassville Flying & Repair Service". In front of me is a plate. Fried cornfish. Fried catfish eggs, corn, beans, Crab legs, potato, big ole onion-purple, and bread7butter (lots).

What really matters when your leg is shattered by a car on the wrong side of the road, and nobody cares? I can fly! At least I did that night ... want to be a writer, do you? So write. I am getting my notes on the web before i lose them. Once its all typed I can work with it. |
||
Item Number one -- I have experienced the worse nightmare of the hitchhiker. I got hit by a car. Broke my left leg! I am in a wheelchair and wont be hitching a ride anytime soon. So I will be updating this page with all the exciting events of my journey from New Mexico to my present location - Springfield Missouri (locals call it Misery).
This weblog is my online journal of my travels across the USA. I don't own a car. Don't want one. By hitching and hiking I get to see more, meet more people.
Sometimes I walk all night. Get to view the stars. Better chance of a UFO close encounter. And when the sun comes up, it shines on a whole new world and a whole new life.
Might be a while between entries since I often go days between access to a computer. I was in the New Mexico desert for two months (Feb and March). In a small intentional-community / village I worked as a cook and carpenter by day, and helped design their website by night. Some of my cooking was via standard propane stove/oven; but, every chance I got I cooked using the sun. It took only four hours to cook a meatloaf in my solar cooker oven. If I get a chance I will upload a couple of digital pictures while I am here.
Tommorrow, or next week or next month, I will be digging a garden in Colorado or programming a computer in Texas, studying vegetable-oil diesels in Missouri, or cutting firewood in Vermont if I get a really good ride.
Still with me? Great. We are all students and teachers. I try to learn something new every day. I try to pass it on - if an idea is worth studying/learning it should be shared. You'll find my opinions on a variety of topics as well as links to other things on the web that I find interesting. I do a lot of reading and will share bits of what I find worthy of remembering and passing on, quoting some and paraphrasing when I think they are too wordy. When the spirit moves me, I may also include longer essays. No one gets any monetary profit from this sharing.

This writing you will find as well at our tripod.thumbsup8 website. What does my subtitle of Alternative Energy mean to me? People, places, things ... Under the People category, I look to "alternative lifestyles". Maybe we do not all fit into the mainstream or majority yet only hermits are against society. Everybody else just chooses which social codes they will follow and who they wish to associate. Some folks use words like Anti-Social. Not. The $40K job, 2-car garage, 401K thing? Been there, done that (could that be a parellel universe?). Now I choose to stop and work when I need. I retired from the rat-race while I can still escape the maze. Place ? Have you walked in the ocean surf. Have you picked wild blackberries by the side of the highway? Stopped to watch chipmunk, or a butterfly, buffalo? Have you looked over that next hill? Join me. Walk with me (at least in your mind). Things ? If I see a windmill or a solar panel I stop and talk. Biomass, organic gardening, using a wood pellet stove, buiding a rocket to Mars? Got my interest. I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me. Check back often! Why Thumbs Up? first. Can't decide between "Rules of Thumb" and "Thumbsup: cause its really about so much more the just hitch hiking. second. Thumbs Up sounds mighty damn positive. Third. Ever seen anybody try to catch a ride with a thumb "down"? "Songs about me, and who I am" (the Chessnut guy I think) .... seems country songs do tell that best. Since I am heading into Texas, Okla, Arkansas and points east, I suspect this is what I will hear in most of the bars I will stop in. Need to listen to more Springsteen, though. Stopped to talk to folks at a little roadside land sales stand. They are building a community in the desert; an oasis for wayward souls. They just had a meeting named the community Outthere, New Mexico. Been here almost 3 months. Looking out the window. I can see the Highway. It is starting to call to me so I now I will be out hitching and hiking soon. Starting to sort through accumulated gear. If it dont fit in my lapsize backpack it dont go. And Im looking at the maps. Memorial Day '05 is behind us. The start of Summer on most folks calendar. Plan to swim in the Atlantic before Labor Day. If I catch a "going-all-the-way" ride, could be there in three days. Lots of people, places and things between here-and-there that are calling out so maybe I will change "by Labor Day" to "on Labor Day". Will find an internet connection and post my location. We may all be surprised. July 16, Looks like I will be spending LABOR day in Springfield, Missouri. Check out the ESSAY PAGE for SHATTERED LEG - SHATTERED LIFE. I got hit by a car and am confined to a wheelchair for the next six months. Going to write a lot of words while I still have access. Got to get it out of my head, make room for more. Might have to wait till a later Tuesday, oct 18th. Still in Springfield, Misery. Still in the damn wheelchair. go to the doc in two weeks to see if I can finally get the cast off my leg. date to sort it out. Read on if you want. Come back again and see how I arrange it. It will show how my mind works (or doesnt work). ++++ song right now - " well I love her, but I love to fish -- well I'm going to miss her, oh looky there I got a bite." who's singing it ??? will give due credit when I can. Favorite song? The Dance by Garth Brooks. First heard it on the music video at the end of the rodeo movie "8 Seconds". I Dont know a lot of song titles, know even fewer words. Recognize just a few singers (well you cant miss Willy or charlie or reba). And Jo D (jodi ??) Messina. That is how I spell WOW. So much energy. What do I do? How do I live? I am an A.T.E. Alternative Technology Engineer I build . Sometimes I use cardboard boxes and aluminum foil. Check my albums at thumbsup8.tripod.com/solartech and thumbsup8.tripod.com/alternativetech. Sometimes I use wood and glass and real insulation. Ever had a smore or a meatloaf cooked by the sun? You gotta try corn-on-the-cob and cornbread and ham & lima cassarole. Its like eating sunshine, and damn impressive to the onlookers. I recycle. All those old AOL discs make great mirrors and spinners. Roadside castaways (litter) can become interesting refrigerator magnets. I stop and work just long enough to buy a meal or restock the backpack. Or I stop long enough to build a house. Or design a website. Or help somebody find out who they are (or aren't). I threw away my photo ID and Social Security Card. (Even changed my name but that didnt help either.) Cut those strings to the mainstream job trap. Now I have to exercise my brain instead of running on the 9-5 autopilot. If I want to spend a night (or more) inside I must make a new friend. Need a shower when no friends are about? Truck stops charge $2; and I can always walk in the rain. No more lonely motel rooms for me. Don't need a condo. Dont want a 50-in TV. Happy to share the cost of the gas, or buy a tire. Dont need to own the car. Will take the freedom of the road over the trappings (root word is TRAP) of material wealth anyday of the week. I stop and read all those roadside markers. In days gone by we built monuments using words like adventurer and explorer and forefather and pioneer. I call myself a modern pioneer. Free spirits are now anti-social drifters. I wept that I had no shoes ... until I saw a man that had no feet. Dont cry for me. Dont shun me. Envy me. Understand me.

When we hear folks say that life is a journey, we automatically think struggle. We are trained / programmed to make it a struggle. We do our duty. We set goals, get jobs/careers, save our money for tomorrow. We struggle through the "work week" anxiously waiting for two days off. We struggle through to another "vacation". We plan for our retirement. Or we struggle to make it day-to-day. Seems like there are only two choices. Either we live for today or struggle for tomorrw. Rather we live for the "gotta haves" today. Our 50-inch TVs display endless ads about new cars, new clothes, bigger houses. And tommorrow? Just heard another radio ad for guaranteed loans. Gotta Have It. And Gotta Finance It. Gotta get a better job or an extra job, or gotta Re-Finance that bigger house to pay the loans. The Bankruptcy option is running out so folks just have to create new ways to dig themselves deeper holes. Everywhere one looks, the only concern is the end of the road. We work hard so that we may "retire" and finally begin enjoying life. Ninety percent of those driving the giant RVs are way over 60 years old.We look with envy at those whose "jobs and purpose" mesh and those Who enjoy their jobs. Have you seen the TV commercials about the CEO thanking everyone for giving up time off to make him richer. Friday, May 20, 2005 2:00 pm When we hear folks say that life is a journey, we automatically think struggle. We are trained throughout life to set goals, get jobs/careers, save our money for tomorrow. We struggle through the "work week" anxiously waiting for two days off. We make it through to another "vacation". We plan for our retirement. everywhere one looks, the only concern is the end of the road. We work hard so that we may "retire" and finally begin enjoying life. We look with envy at those whose "jobs and purpose" mesh. Who enjoy their jobs I have started my new journey, using my thumb and my feet as my main mode of transportation. In years gone by this worked well for me, and countless thousands of other travelers. Indeed,I have managed to make it from the West Coast (Santa Cruz, CA, USA) to the Outthere, New Mexico thus far on this trip. Granted it took several months to get thus far (well, two weeks to get here and 3 months of stoppover). Along the way I have stopped and worked, and just stopped to visit, and stopped to try to teach folks about life and alternative energies. We teach best what we most need to learn. "Who are they to say? Have they dug deeply enough? Have they looked in all the corners? Bah, they have scarcely scratched the surface. They have a Garden of Eden complex, believing men all came from one source." - Zachary Verne, The Lonesome Gods by Louis L'Amour Don't get me wrong. I love technology. Give me a flying carpet or a flying saucer. I just have no need to be a wage slave. The saying goes that you cant take it with you, so I dont find the need to worry about it, or be bogged down with the material goods. My mind has a good camera. What pictures I don't store there I can store on my TRIPOD photo pages. Check out /solarranger and /alternativetech DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THE NIGHT ... dont remember the rest right now, do know it is that Bill Shakesspere guy. As the title goes, this is just "rants and raves" for now till I have time and place to get it organized. I will be getting back on the road, heading eastward, just after memorial day. Cant say yet when i will get to another terminal so I am just trying to copy everything I can for later. --- Funny I learned HTML by candlelight while living under a bridge on the coast ((this "homeless" person was getting up every morning at 5am by alarm clock and catching the bus to a job in the city)). Now I must learn the newer stuff like XML for newer website construction and nonotechnologies cause that is the latest tech in producing coating for solar panels. ------------ do you know your mayan calendar 13/20 signature? We just traded half-a-pound of jerkey for a six-pack of cold beer. So i am sitting in the shade, back on 76, with Miller Highlife Lite, four miles east of Cassville. Going to look for an early camp so I dont encounter a sherriff. Am sitting by D&D Oil Company's 1000-gal propane tanks. I am hoping these big ole black ants are not the biting kind. "How much do you drink?" the counsellor asked. "All of it," he said, as if that should have been self-evident. --Stephen King, ON WRITING The alarm wnet off at 5 am. He could not rely on the sun to wake hime, deep uder the underpass that he called home. He pushed off the newspaper blanket, being careful to fold it rather than crumpling or tearing; of the 27 jobs listed in the classified section, there were still three that he had not yet filled out applications for. he retrieved the jug that had been left out to collect rainwater. After filtering a cupful in which to steep his twice-used teabag, he used the remainder to wash and shave. His stomach growled. He sipped the weak tea and maintained his resolve to use his sole reamining dollar to do laundry. Clean clothes were needed before he could fill out the other job applications. He gathered the newpaper and bag of dirty clothes and headed down the trail. nearing the bottom, he slipped in the mud, tripped over his hunger-weakened legs. rolled downward over dirt and sidewalk and came to rest on skinned hands in knees in the roadway. A horn blared and brakes squealed. he looked up at the bus filling his view and scrambled out of its way. A smile transfixed his face, reflecting the sudden glimmer of hope brought forth by the sign on the side of the bus. Pictured were a man and woman in business attire holding a cardboard sign which read, "Will work for Latte!" He pulled a marker from his shirt pocket and tore a signboard from a discarded box, careful to keep his bloody hands from marring the writing surface. A quick work of penmanship and he gothered his belongings. Walking down the road, he positrioned himself in the median by the next tradffic light. Cars stopping in the turn lane would be able to read his sign, "Will work for Food." Cars passed and his hopes faded. a blue sedan pulled up beside him and the drivers window rolled down. An arm extended holding a paper sack with a fast food logo. Amid tears and words of thanks he pulls a hot breakfast sandwich from the bag. He takes a bite and savors the flavor. A pickup truck stops, and hope builds, only to be shattered by a one-finger gesture and spiteful words, "Get a job". As the pickup sped off, he dropped the bag and stepped into the path of an oncoming garbage truck. His last thought, "What did he think I was trying to do?" |

Welcome, Rogue Rangers. THEY FOUND US. GRAB YOUR TIMELOX CARDS AND EXECUTE PLAN hopi. Authenticate romeo-romeo-alpha-juliet-81309. DISCLAIMER #1: If you are not a Rogue Ranger, the following information will be of NO INTEREST to you. In fact it is downright boring, so you are advised to go away!! DISCLAIMER #2: Rogue Rangers are the imagination of the RPG website author. The following information is valid for roleplaying gamers that have completed requisite Ranger and Shaman levels only.!! Finally we can take command of the BWYNTB protocol cause we know the true meaning. Be Who You Need Be. Be Who, What, When, Where, Why you need to be.
As I am sure you recall: Road Rangers dealt primarily with giving people an opportunity to change what they believed to be hopeless relationships or situations. It was up to them (us) to appear on the scene at just the right time and place (refer back to the 5W's). Insanity has best been described as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. We provided a timely change to the insanity. If the subject chose not to change, we had to leave them to the insanity. Free Choice is cardinal. Either way we always moved on, looking and lead to our next life. Bullshit. How many lives did we screw up besides our own?whereas, Rougue Rangers are supposed to be advanced souls, at least farther up the ladder of advancement than Road Rangers. But to truly grow, we MUST move beyond the concept of being "Who, What, When, Where, or Why" for a given mission and developing a more stable version of self. We are becoming politically-corrected couch-potatoes. Seems there is always somebody else to blame so we don't have to take personal responsibility."They" are either at fault or responsible to solve our troubles or going to save the day. So how come we are the Rogue's?
Guess we are the rangers who finally figured out that not only are we a figment of my mind, we are really a bunch of addicts that can't face life without a helper? Parallel Universes. Different realities. Shifting magnetic fields. Time travel. Infinite simultaneous lives, we change ourselves by our wants and needs. In a world of endless imagination, anywhere the mind can go, we will follow. We must help them find those solutions ... before they turn their prophecies into their reality. Get busy. Many clocks are ticking. monday-24oct-- "lifes a bitch and then you die", a bumpersticker with more and more meaning as each day goes by. Even my disabled bus pus is running out-they extended it from 14oct to 31oct only even though I still have a cast on my leg. Have to take another form to the doctor on the 27th for him to say how much longer he will consider me handicapped. So of course the most I can get VVA to pay on a disabled bus pass, if they are able and still willing, is a week. Found out where I might be able to sell foodstamps (well, someone who needs food and is willing to pay me half value since it helps them too). Cant do it till 10Nov-Marine Corps Birthday, by the way- but perhaps I can get enough for a bus ticket to texas since I can get neither a job or assistance here in springfield and I really dont know where else to go or turn. Cant go back. Burned those bridges. Just dont know. Getting very discouraged. But of course the Govt doesnt see me as depressed so I must not be. Linking all my personality pages together in the vicious circle they are. None will ever be read but by me/us so I dont know why I bother sometimes but at least this way I can get some of it out so it isnt bothering me inside as much. I have stuffed so much emotional bullshit inside that even I can smell it at times. Where will I go? Where will we end up when its all done and over? Wish I could make it happen the way I want. But then I would have to know what it is that I want before I can make it happen and I dont have that answer either. ((subject of the day is How to Settle Down. Way past time to stop roaming, ranging, wandering. Can I do it? Is it too late?)) thursday27october2005 - the cast is off the leg. Must learn how to walk again. Sooner the better so I can get on with life (see above) and move out of this town of Springfield. Thinking of going to Texas, but is it practical when I cant even walk yet? Gotta have goals i reckon. Face it. I am scared of what the future holds. But whatever it is it is a furture in this here-and-now for us since we didnt get killed by that car. We're not overly paranoid. The favored time of computing just happens to be late nite when one sees a mirrorlike reflection in the window so its possible to view whats in front and behind at the same time. THEY like this new DSL -always on- connectivity. No more shifting ISP addresses. THEY KNOW! THEY ARE WATCHING AND EVEN COUNTING OUR KEYSTROKES SO IF YOU READ THIS IT WONT BE FORE LONG BEFORE THEY START WATCHING YOU TOO. YOU BETTER GO PULL THE PLUG ON YOUR COMPUTER SO they DONT FIND you!!! Overly Paranoid - is that an oxymoron like military intelligence? |

22102005- Will you look at what they did AFTER we left the college? THEY said it would be a conflict of interest, since I was working for the college,if I got someone to install a solar swimmingpool system (and collected a fee). They wouldnt even let us bake and sell solar cookies if we took over the campus Solar Club. (which is of couse one of the reasons we left) -
NEWS Foothill-De Anza Celebrates Solar Power Installation and Energy Efficiency Improvements SOLAR ENERGY NEWS CENTER Africa Asia/Pacific Europe North America South America Companies Governments/ Funding Manufacturing Projects Products Technology Home July 20, 2005 Los Altos Hills, CA, USA: Foothill-De Anza Celebrates Solar Power Installation and Energy Efficiency Improvements The Foothill-De Anza Community College District has completed the installation of more than 780 kilowatts of solar electric and energy-efficient cogeneration projects at both Foothill and De Anza colleges, including a moving solar-paneled parking structure that tracks the sun as it generates power. Along with prior improvements to lighting, air conditioning and energy management systems, the installations will reduce the district's electricity purchases by 46 percent -- more than 11 million kilowatt-hours annually -- and save the district about $800,000 a year. The projects, which are funded in part from the energy savings they create, reduce the district's operating costs while lowering demand for power from the local utility, which in turn benefits the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The district's reduction in purchased power from the local utility translates to avoided local carbon dioxide emissions of more than 14 million pounds per year, equivalent to planting more than 2,000 acres of trees. The improvements were highlighted this morning at De Anza College in Cupertino at an event held under one of the district's two new solar-paneled parking structures. Foothill-De Anza Board of Trustees President Edward A. Hay, Chancellor Martha J. Kanter, representatives from both colleges, including a recent graduate, an official of Chevron Energy Solutions and others spoke at the event. "We're proud to serve as a model for educational institutions statewide and across the nation in achieving energy sustainability, preserving the environment while reducing energy costs and thereby maximizing resources for students," said Kanter. "We're pleased that through these energy efficiency methods as well as other means -- such as through the Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies -- we can educate students and the community about sustainability and the environment." The Kirsch Center, the Science Center and the Student and Community Services Center at De Anza College are constructed to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System(TM) standards for high-performance, sustainable buildings. The Science Center opened in fall 2004, and the Kirsch Center and Student and Community Services Center will open for the upcoming fall quarter. The projects were designed, engineered and constructed by Chevron Energy Solutions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chevron Corporation that provides energy efficiency, conservation and renewable power projects for public institutions throughout the United States. "As a result of these improvements, the district is able to significantly reduce its electricity purchases while helping the environment," said Jim Davis, president of Chevron Energy Solutions. "We're delighted to have partnered with the district in projects that promote sustainable development." The latest improvements at the colleges included eight 60-kilowatt Capstone micro turbines (four at each campus) that produce electricity plus heat recovery systems that heat each campus pool efficiently, and PowerLight solar photovoltaic-paneled parking structures that provide shade and together generate 301 kilowatts of electricity. In total, the cogeneration and solar systems can produce enough electricity to power more than 700 homes. The $5.1 million total cost of the cogeneration and solar projects was offset by $2 million in rebates from the state of California. The remainder is being paid from the energy savings resulting from the new equipment and Measure E construction bond funds.
